Rubella, also known as German measles, is a viral disease that causes a mild fever, rash, and swollen glands. It's highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets.
Symptoms
Low-grade fever
Sore throat
Red rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body
Swollen lymph glands
Malaise
Upper respiratory tract symptoms
Swollen and pink-colored eyes (conjunctivitis)
Headache
Stuffy, runny nose
Cough
Complications
Arthritis, especially in adult and adolescent females
Skin bleedings
Brain infection
Neuritis
Inflammation of the testicles
Risk during pregnancy
If a pregnant woman is infected with rubella early in pregnancy, she can pass the virus to her developing baby
This can result in miscarriage, fetal death, stillbirth, or congenital malformations
Prevention
The best way to prevent rubella is to get vaccinated
The vaccine is safe and helps your body fight off the virus
